Trees left, water right… the only things in your mind when stood on the tee, ‘avoid those dangers, just please find the fairway’. Sure enough you step up and slice it into the water… so how can you make improvements off the tee to help keep the ball in play more often. Try these simple tips next time you’re out:
‘Aim small, miss small’ - probably heard this before but it’s still a great mindset to have on the tee, or any shot. Pick a very small target in the distance, and focus only on hitting that. If your target area is the whole fairway, that leaves you open to not having a focus point and more likely to miss wildly.
Clubface control - the most important part of the swing is impact. Where the club head is facing determines where the ball goes. Practice doing ‘half swings’ to be able to have a greater feel of where the clubface is pointing. If every shot is going right it’s open, and left means it’s closed.
Club selection - you don’t always have to hit driver! If the fairway is very narrow and trouble everywhere, pull out a club you are more comfortable with. You are more likely to make par from further back, than 300 yards in the trees.
Give these a go and you’ll keep the ball in play more often.
