We’ve all heard the saying ‘drive for show, putt for dough’ but let’s be honest, we all want the bragging rights of ripping driver 50 yards past our mates. So how can you gain those extra yards to leave you feeling like Bryson DeChambeau? I’ve put together some simple tips that will have you driving par 4’s in no time
Set up – if you haven’t got this correct, then you are setting yourself up for failure. Your ball position should be lined up just inside your left heel (for right handers), this helps to promote an upward strike on the ball. You’re never gonna hit high bombs if you’re not hitting up on the ball. Simple way to check this is to chuck a club down to line up the ball inside the line of your left heel.
Takeaway – most amateur golfers swing ‘over the top’ on their downswing which causes those weak slices that no one wants to see. Chances are your initial takeaway is causing the over the top motion on the way back down. If you are bringing the club too far inside at the start, then there is only one way it can go. To fix this, put another ball directly behind yours and practice pushing it back in a straight line.
Speed – at the end of the day, if you haven’t got club head speed then you’re never gonna get off the ladies tees. Biggest mistake people make when trying to swing faster is relying on moving their arms faster. Your power comes from rotating your biggest muscles, so work on increasing hip and shoulder rotation in your back swing. Then load up that power and unleash it on the way down.
No one wants to be the shortest hitter in the group. Give these tips a go next time you’re down the range and hopefully before you know it you’ll be crushing it on the course
