Picture this; you’ve bombed your drive 300 (ish) down the middle, chest out, your mates can't believe how far you hit it. Now you have a 30 yard pitch into the green, absolutely no problem for you surely?.. you duff it 3 yards in front of you, then thin it to the back edge and 3 putt for double.
If that sounds like you, then keep reading for some simple tips on how to become a young Seve around the green.
Ball position – despite what a lot of amateurs think, when you have a wedge in your hand you need the ball to be slightly forward in your stance. If it's too far back, it promotes a steeper angle of attack causing the leading edge of your wedge to dig in. Try moving it more in line with your lead heel, this will help to engage the bounce of the wedge and glide nicely through the turf.
Weight distribution – a good guide is always to feel like your weight is at least 60/40 in favour of your front foot. If your weight is too much on your back foot, this is going to cause the club to bottom out behind the ball which leads to those horrendous 3 foot duffs. Get more weight on the front foot to help strike the ball first.
Rotate the body – Common mistake from amateurs is not turning their body and only using hands/arms which leads to inconsistency. Feel like your chest is moving toward the target on the way through, rather than flipping your hands at it.
No more thins and fats when you’re around the green, give these tips a go and you’ll be known as the ‘up and down’ king.
